"Look Before You Lock!"

In the midst of this summer heat we can sometimes get preoccupied with running into a store forgetting that we have precious cargo in our backseat--whether that be a child or pet. It's important to "look before you lock"! Did you know that heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash-related fatalities for children 14 and younger?

Here are some key tips to remind you to look before you lock:

  • Always check the back seats of your vehicle before your lock it and walk away.

  • Keep a stuffed animal or other memento in your child’s car seat when it’s empty, and move it to the front seat as a visual reminder when your child is in the back seat.

  • If someone else is driving your child, or your daily routine has been altered, always check to make sure your child has arrived safely.

In the event you are somewhere and notice a child unattended in a hot car here are some tips in order to take action:

  • Don’t wait more than a few minutes for the driver to return.

  • If the child is not responsive or is in distress, immediately:

  • Call 911.

  • Get the child out of the car.

  • Spray the child with cool water (not in an ice bath).

  • If the child is responsive:

  • Stay with the child until help arrives.

  • Have someone else search for the driver or ask the facility to page them.

As many of you know, we are a family run business and we care about our families and our community. Let's rally together to be vigilant of our surroundings and to pay attention to children or pets that may be locked in cars.

Stay cool, vigilant and have a great summer!
